Project title:
Deformation behavior of polymineralic rocks: implications for rheology and seismic properties of the middle to lower crust

Supervisors:
Dr. Sandra Piazolo, Dr. Craig O’Neill

Flow laws used in the present geodynamic models are based on observations and experiments on monomineralic samples, even though the presence of the second phases can strongly influence the rheology of the deforming aggregate. The aim of the project is to evaluate flow laws for polymineralic rocks in the lower crust and develop a numerical model which allows application of microstructural data to large-scale geodynamic models. The project involves analyses of the deformation processes and seismic properties of mid to lower crustal rocks, and ice deformation experiments combined with numerical modelling

Research Interests

  • Structural geology, microstructural analysis.
  • Igneous and metamorphic petrology.
  • Experimental deformation and heating of rocks and analogue materials i.e. ice.
  • Regional and structural geology of collisional orogens.
