Profile

Stephen Craven is a Research Officer in the CCFS/GEMOC in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Macquarie University. He completed a PhD by publication and is the Manager of GEMOC’s Mineral Processing Unit (MPU). The MPU is a facility set up around a Selfrag Lab S1.1 electric pulse disaggregation instrument to prepare pure mineral phases for analysis and research. His research interest is high temperature low pressure (HTLP) metamorphism and his research area is the Wongwibinda HTLP Metamorphic Complex in Northeastern NSW.

Stephen worked for the CSIRO’s Division of Exploration and Mining for 26yrs and has had considerable experience in geochemical analysis in particular TIM analysis for, whole rock, REE and Strontium isotope analyses. He was instrument in setting up and managing a facility similar to the MPU at CSIRO and was chosen to set up and manage the unit at Macquarie.

Fields of Research

The charter of the Division of Exploration and Mining at CSIRO was to research better methods of exploring for economic mineral deposits. Stephen was involved in the study of mineralogy and geochemical halos, around ore deposits, using ‘whole rock’ trace elements and isotopes with the aim of enlarging the exploration target. He was a member of the ARC Centre for Isotope Studies at CSIRO.

The Wongwibinda study has been broad based involving field mapping, petrology, whole rock and mineral analysis, zircon U/Pb geochronology and trace element analysis and zircon hafnium isotope analysis. The project has studied the timing and metamorphic field gradient and has modeled the possibility of high temperature metamorphism being due to heat transfer by hot fluids. Further studies will identify and characterise the source of sediments that form the protolith at Wongwibinda and the relationship between the protolith and S-type granites that intrude the area. Overall, the project hopes to identify the heat source or sources and the timing of events at Wongwibinda and what this adds to the understanding of the tectonics of the area and the formation of economic minerals deposits.
